What is Botox?

After years of repetitive expressions such as laughing, squinting and sun damage, the skin around the eyes and forehead often develops deep lines and wrinkles. These lines are known as expression lines.

BOTOX is a purified protein molecule, which is injected into the specific muscle or area for cosmetic or therapeutic purposes. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people from 18 to 65 years of age.

How does botox work?

Facial lines appear because the muscle lying just beneath the skin surface is in a continuous state of contraction. These muscles pull the skin unevenly, which causes the appearance of wrinkles and frown lines. BOTOX works on these muscles by blocking the chemical communication between the nerves and the underlying muscle; relaxing the muscle and reducing the contractions that cause persistent frown lines. This effectively improves the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines and wrinkles. BOTOX does not affect normal facial expressions. Using the same mechanism, BOTOX can also block the chemical communication in the nerves responsible for sweating, and can thus be used for the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
